EFF Calls for Warrants Before Police Search License Plate Data

Original: Require Police to Get a Warrant to Search ALPR Data

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is urging lawmakers to require police to obtain a warrant before searching data from automated license plate readers. ALPR systems sweep up mass location records of drivers, and civil liberties groups argue unrestricted searches of that database amount to warrantless surveillance of everyone's movements.

Why now: Renewed debate over police surveillance powers and the vast location databases built by license plate readers
