Trump Envoy Tells Gulf Allies US Security Guarantees Have Limits
Original: Trump Envoy Tells Nervous Gulf Allies U.S. Can't Guarantee Security Forever
A Trump administration envoy has told nervous Gulf allies that the United States cannot guarantee their security forever, according to the Wall Street Journal. The message signals growing pressure on Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and other regional states to shoulder more of their own defense costs and planning. Officials and analysts are weighing what the remarks mean for the future of American security commitments across the Persian Gulf.
Why now: Gulf states and their partners are anxious about the durability of US security commitments under the Trump administration.
