Music scholars Daniel K. L. Chua and Alexander Rehding's 2021 book 'Alien Listening' is drawing attention with its study of NASA's Voyager Golden Record, the collection of sounds and music from Earth sent into space in 1977. The book examines how the record's music might be heard and interpreted by extraterrestrial listeners, and what that thought experiment reveals about how humans analyze and understand music itself.

Why now: Renewed interest in space exploration and the Golden Record keeps discussions of how aliens might perceive Earth's music alive.
