Russia has released jailed US citizen Stephen Hubbard, following a request from President Trump. The release came as Trump envoy Steve Witkoff held talks with Vladimir Putin on a proposed Ukraine peace plan. The move is being read as a gesture of goodwill in ongoing US-Russia negotiations, though details of Hubbard's case and conditions of his release remain limited.

Why now: It is seen as a diplomatic concession by Moscow tied to US-Russia talks on ending the war in Ukraine.
