Witkoff calls Putin a 'humanitarian' after US citizen released
Original: Witkoff calls Putin a ‘humanitarian’ after Russia releases US citizen Stephen Hubbard
US envoy Steve Witkoff described Vladimir Putin as a 'humanitarian' after Moscow released American citizen Stephen Hubbard. The remarks, tied to Hubbard's release from detention in Russia, drew attention for the unusually warm characterization of the Russian president, prompting debate about US-Russia diplomacy and the concessions being made to secure Americans' freedom.
Why now: The flattering description of Putin amid ongoing US-Russia negotiations is striking and controversial.
