Why Hiroshima made a surprise first-pick scouting call

Original: スカウト

Hiroshima's decision to scout and draft a little-known player from a rural area as its unanimous first pick is drawing attention in Japanese baseball media. AERA reports the pick emerged unexpectedly amid the so-called 'zombie tobacco' issue, turning a problem into an opportunity. Meanwhile, SoftBank entered draft day without a settled first choice, with Aoyama Gakuin pitcher Suzuki the reported favourite.

Why now: Japanese professional baseball's draft is imminent, and clubs' scouting decisions and unsettled first picks are being hotly reported.
