Flesh-eating screwworm parasite confirmed in US wildlife
Original: Officials confirm flesh-eating New World screwworm parasite found in US wildlife
US officials have confirmed that the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, has been detected in American wildlife. The finding raises concern among farmers and wildlife authorities because screwworm infestations can kill livestock and animals, and the pest was eradicated from the United States decades ago. Authorities are expected to ramp up surveillance and containment efforts.
Why now: The parasite was previously eradicated from the US, so its return threatens livestock and wildlife and could trigger containment measures.
