Data centers could erase decades of air quality gains
A new report warns that the rapid growth of data centers, driven largely by artificial intelligence, is producing enough pollution to potentially reverse decades of progress in US air quality. Emissions from power generation serving these facilities are rising, with communities near data center hubs facing increased exposure to harmful pollutants and associated health costs.
Why now: Concern over AI's energy demand is intensifying as new research links data center expansion to worsening air pollution.
