El Salvador's president threatens Haitian gangs over military hostages
El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has issued a threat against Haitian gangs holding members of the military hostage. The hardline approach mirrors the anti-gang crackdown that made Bukele internationally known at home, and it signals possible escalation over the hostage standoff in Haiti, where gang violence has destabilised the country. Details about the hostages and the gangs' demands remain limited.
Why now: A foreign head of state directly threatening Haitian gangs marks an unusual escalation in the Haiti security crisis.
