Judge orders Trump to give deposition in $10bn BBC lawsuit

A US judge has ordered Donald Trump to sit for a deposition as part of his $10bn defamation lawsuit against the BBC. The ruling moves the case into the discovery phase, requiring the president to answer questions under oath. The suit stems from Trump's grievances over the broadcaster's editing of a speech he gave on January 6, 2021, and is being closely watched as a test of media accountability and presidential legal power.
Why now: A court compelling a sitting US president to testify under oath against a major international broadcaster is an unusual and consequential legal development.
