The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have announced a 10-year framework agreement to build 850 F-35 fighter jets, stabilising production at up to 156 aircraft per year. In exchange for the long-term commitment, Lockheed will fund $7 billion in projects. The deal still requires approval and funding from Congress.

Why now: It is one of the largest US defence procurement commitments in years, with major implications for military spending and the F-35 programme.
