The International Criminal Court has been awarded the European Parliament's human rights prize, a €50,000 award recognising defenders of human rights and freedom of thought, with past winners including Nelson Mandela. The Court was nominated by center-left groups weeks after the United States under President Trump imposed sanctions on it, a move widely seen as targeting the Court's work. The timing of the award is being read in Brussels as a pointed show of European support for the ICC's independence.
Why now: The prize is seen as a symbolic European rebuke to Trump's sanctions on the ICC.
