Reno swaps license plate reader vendor amid privacy pushback
Original: Out of the Flock and into the Axon: Asked to dump license plate readers, Reno just switches brands
Reno, Nevada, faced calls to abandon automated license plate readers over privacy and surveillance concerns. Instead of dropping the technology, the city is moving to a different provider, replacing Flock cameras with equipment from Axon. Critics argue the brand switch sidesteps the intent of public objections, while officials gain similar surveillance capability under a new name. The debate highlights tension between local governments and residents over police surveillance tools.
Why now: The city's decision to switch surveillance vendors rather than cancel the program is drawing criticism from privacy advocates.
