Habitat matters more than climate for Finnish animal ranges, study finds
Original: Habitat explains Finnish animal distributions better than climate, study finds
A new study from Finland finds that the characteristics of local habitats explain the distribution of animal species better than climate variables do. The findings, reported by Phys.org, suggest that conservation planning focused only on climate projections may miss the more immediate importance of preserving suitable habitat, with potential implications for how biodiversity is protected as environments change.
Why now: It challenges the common assumption that climate is the main driver of species distribution, which matters for conservation policy.
