Ukrainian population geneticist Taras Oleksyk's remarks are being widely shared: "A nation is not a biological category. It is a community of people who choose to share a political future, build institutions, preserve their culture, and take responsibility for their country together." Readers are praising the framing as a pointed rebuttal to ethnic or racial definitions of nationhood, particularly in the context of debates about Ukraine's identity.
Why now: The quote resonates amid ongoing debates about national identity and Russia's justifications for the war against Ukraine.
