Silent protest at COP17 urges protection for environmental defenders
A silent protest was staged at COP17 calling on governments to protect environmental defenders, who face rising threats and violence in many countries. Demonstrators used silence rather than chants to draw attention to the dangers faced by activists and to pressure negotiators to include stronger protection measures in climate talks.
Why now: The protest highlights growing concern over violence against environmental activists during a major UN climate summit.
