Japanese lawmaker Koichi Hagiuda has said Shinzo Abe instructed him: 'Don't isolate Iran, handle the diplomacy with Iran yourself.' The remark sheds light on Abe's long-standing strategy of maintaining a direct channel with Tehran, a distinctive feature of Japanese diplomacy in the Middle East. The quote is drawing attention as debates continue over how to engage Iran, and over the political legacy Abe left within Japan's ruling party.

Why now: Ongoing tension around Iran and interest in Abe's diplomatic legacy are putting his Iran approach back in focus.
