Mississippi flood prevention brings unexpected carbon benefits
Original: Mississippi flood prevention has surprising carbon benefits
New coverage highlights that flood prevention efforts along the Mississippi River deliver carbon benefits beyond their primary purpose. Measures that protect communities from flooding, such as wetland restoration and natural flood management, also capture and store carbon, making them valuable for both climate adaptation and mitigation. The finding suggests investing in such infrastructure can serve dual environmental goals.
Why now: Renewed attention on nature-based climate solutions and flood risks is drawing interest in projects with co-benefits.
