Why Gopher in 2026?
A writer on the SDF community hosting has published a phlog post asking why anyone would still use Gopher, the pre-web hypertext protocol from the early 1990s, in 2026. The piece is drawing attention on Hacker News, where it sits near the top of the front page, with commenters debating the appeal of Gopher's simplicity, low bandwidth needs, and escape from the modern web's clutter.
Why now: Nostalgia for and debate over minimalist, pre-web protocols continue to resonate with technical audiences.
