Antietam Battlefield sites to close October 27 for ammunition removal
Original: Antietam National Battlefield Visitor center, Dunker Church and nearby roads and trails to close October 27 during ammunition removal
Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland will close its visitor center, the historic Dunker Church and several nearby roads and trails on October 27 while crews remove ammunition from the site. Officials are alerting visitors ahead of the one-day closure so trips can be planned around the restricted areas. The battlefield, site of the bloodiest single day of the Civil War, remains otherwise open to the public.
Why now: The temporary closure of iconic landmarks at a major Civil War site affects visitor plans and involves a safety operation on historic grounds.
