Brazilians head to the polls in polarised presidential election
Original: brazil elections
Brazil is voting in a presidential election that pits leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. The race is being watched worldwide as a test of the country's democracy, with Lula — described by Politico as 'the Left's last great survivor' — seeking a comeback after corruption convictions were annulled. Bolsonaro has repeatedly cast doubt on the electoral system, raising fears of unrest depending on the result.
Why now: Brazilians are voting and results could reshape the political direction of one of the world's largest democracies.
