Original: US Coast Guard repatriates 63 migrants to Dominican Republic after sea interception
The US Coast Guard has repatriated 63 migrants to the Dominican Republic after intercepting them at sea. The operation is part of ongoing US maritime patrols aimed at stopping irregular migration attempts across the Mona Passage and surrounding waters, where people frequently set out in overcrowded and unsafe vessels in hopes of reaching Puerto Rico or the US mainland.
Why now: Irregular migration by sea from the Dominican Republic remains a recurring and sensitive issue, and each repatriation draws attention to the dangers and policy debate around it.
