Paris has reportedly asked four telecom operators to stand ready to switch off TikTok and Instagram for twelve hours. In the same period, Milan detained the administrator of a page that called people to gather in public squares. Commenters see both moves as measures targeting the online tools citizens use to organise protests, and the pairing of the two events has drawn attention to how European authorities are handling digital mobilisation.
Why now: Concern that European authorities are restricting social media and online organising tools amid protests.
