German debate over police statistics on migrant crime
Original: „Ausländerkriminalität“ ist in aller Munde. Aber was genau sagen die Zahlen in der Polizeistatistik eigentlich aus? 🚔 🆕
A new expert analysis by Mediendienst Integration, promoted by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, examines what Germany's police crime statistics actually say about so-called 'foreigner criminality'. The key finding: raw numbers from police statistics cannot be read as direct evidence about migration and crime, since they are shaped by reporting practices and demographic factors. Commentators urge anyone debating crime and migration to interpret the figures with far more caution.
Why now: Immigration and crime are prominent topics in German political debate, and the new analysis challenges how the statistics are commonly cited.
