French fishing in focus as anglers catch giant catfish with sandwich

Original: pêche

Fishing is drawing attention across France for several reasons. A fleet exit plan has been launched for eel fishing, while in Lyon an enormous catfish was caught using a croque-monsieur as bait. Meanwhile, fishermen and river officials report this summer has been unprecedented for fish and waterways, with conditions described as far worse than the 2003 drought.

Why now: A mix of unusual fishing stories and drought concerns for rivers has put the topic in the French news cycle.
