Flying fox colonies in New South Wales and Victoria are at risk of mass starvation as food shortages grip their habitats, according to a Guardian report on the state of Australia's fruit bat populations. Conservationists are concerned the decline in available food could trigger widespread deaths among the animals, which play a key role in pollinating native forests.

Why now: Reports of wildlife facing starvation in Australia tend to draw attention amid ongoing concern about habitat loss and climate pressures.
