Original: @ classicalmusic Richard Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra Op. 30 Richard Strauss, conductor Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
A 1944 recording of Richard Strauss conducting the Vienna Philharmonic in Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, is circulating among classical music enthusiasts. The performance is notable because it captures the composer, then in his eighties, leading his own famous tone poem, written in 1896 and later known worldwide from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Why now: Listeners are drawn to the rare chance to hear the composer conducting his own work in a wartime-era recording.
