US startup's plan to light Earth from space draws criticism
Original: Sunlight at night: US startup’s demonstration of lighting Earth from space draws criticism
A US startup demonstrated reflecting sunlight onto Earth at night using mirrors in orbit, imitating how the sun's light can be bounced from space. The company's move has drawn pushback from some scientists, environmentalists and residents in California, who warn of potential impacts on wildlife, astronomy and the night sky. Critics question whether artificial sunlight from orbit should be pursued at all.
Why now: The demonstration of artificial sunlight from space raises fresh concerns about light pollution and the commercialisation of orbit.
