Ultrawealthy Emit More Carbon Than Nearly Half of Humanity
Original: The Ultrawealthy Produce More Carbon Pollution Than Nearly Half of Humanity
New reporting highlights the outsized carbon footprint of the world's richest people, whose emissions are said to exceed those of nearly half of the global population combined. Private jets are identified as one of the biggest sources of emissions for the ultrawealthy, alongside their luxury lifestyles and vast investments. Commenters are pointing to the figures as evidence of stark climate inequality, arguing that a tiny elite bears disproportionate responsibility for global warming while poorer populations suffer its consequences.
Why now: Fresh reporting on climate inequality has reignited debate over the responsibility of the super-rich for carbon emissions.
