The French Senate has voted down the proposed constitutional reform that would have granted Corsica a measure of autonomy. Following the rejection, Corsican autonomist representatives withdrew from negotiations with the government, deepening the standoff over the island's political future. Supporters of the reform see the Senate's decision as a setback for years of dialogue between Paris and Corsican nationalists.
Why now: The Senate vote and the autonomists' withdrawal mark a major setback for Corsica's push for self-government, sparking renewed debate over French territorial reform.
