Western Sahara Mission Heads Back to Security Council Vote
Original: Western Sahara Mission Returns to United Nations Security Council Vote
The Western Sahara question is returning to the United Nations Security Council for a vote, as the UN peacekeeping mission there requires renewed backing. Diplomats are weighing the mandate of MINURSO, the mission monitoring the ceasefire in the disputed territory claimed by Morocco and the Polisario Front. The territory has been contested since Spain withdrew in 1975, and council votes on extending the mission routinely expose divisions among member states over how to resolve the long-running dispute.
Why now: The Security Council must vote on renewing the mandate of the UN mission in Western Sahara, a recurring moment of diplomatic tension.
