US Moves To End UN Peacekeeping Mission In Western Sahara
Original: US Seeks To End MINURSO Peacekeeping In Western Sahara
The United States is pushing to shut down MINURSO, the UN peacekeeping mission deployed in Western Sahara since 1991 to monitor the ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Ending the mission would remove the main international mechanism overseeing the disputed territory, which Morocco administers and the Polisario seeks to formalize as an independent state. Critics warn the move could destabilize one of Africa's longest-running conflicts.
Why now: Washington's push to dismantle a decades-old UN mission signals a major shift in US policy on Western Sahara, with significant diplomatic consequences.
