Rockstar Games is being widely discussed after news circulated about union organizing among its staff. Commenters note that for years the company was held up as the model of a new creative class of workers in New York City, but one without a union. Observers who once sat in university meetings where that framing was repeated say the current development overturns it, calling it a major moment for labor in the video game industry.
Why now: Organizing at one of the world's most prominent game studios challenges the long-held image of game developers as a unionless creative workforce.
