US startup's plan to light Earth from space draws criticism
Original: US startup's demonstration of lighting Earth from space draws critcism
A US startup has demonstrated technology to reflect sunlight from satellites onto Earth's surface, effectively illuminating areas from space at night. The California-based company's test has drawn sharp criticism from astronomers, environmentalists and the public, who warn about light pollution, disruption to wildlife and ecosystems, and the risks of commercialising control over natural light without regulation or public consent.
Why now: The idea of commercially controlled artificial sunlight from space raises concerns over light pollution, ecological harm and the lack of regulation.
