Chinese research vessels loiter near undersea cables more than any other nation
Chinese research ships spend more time loitering near undersea cables in the Pacific than vessels of any other nation, according to a new report. The civilian fleet has reportedly been tracked performing 'lawnmower' survey patterns over critical cable routes, raising concerns that the ships may be mapping the seafloor in ways that could enable future sabotage of communications infrastructure.
Why now: Undersea cables carry most global internet traffic, and reports of systematic surveying near them heighten fears of espionage and potential sabotage.
