Google is making it easier to install third-party app stores on Android. Starting December 1, approved alternative app stores will get one-tap installs and automatic background updates on compatible devices. The catch is that Google itself decides which stores qualify, and stores must complete a registration process, drawing criticism that the company still controls access to its platform.

Why now: People are debating whether the changes genuinely open up Android or keep Google in control of app distribution.
