Sonia wanted to be a bricklayer and was not allowed to

Original: albañil

A 45-year-old Spanish woman has spoken about being barred from becoming a bricklayer, saying she has not seen a woman on a construction site in 20 years. She studied technical architecture and now says her class has more women than men training to be bricklayers, highlighting a slow shift in Spain's male-dominated construction trades.

Why now: Her account of exclusion from construction work is sparking conversation about women entering traditionally male trades.
