The Vera Rubin Observatory has identified a new dwarf planet, provisionally designated 2026 ED138, roughly 1,000 kilometres wide about half the size of Pluto. It orbits even farther from the Sun than Pluto and becomes one of a small handful of officially recognised dwarf planets. Astronomy enthusiasts are sharing the find as an early scientific success for the newly operational observatory.
Why now: The Rubin Observatory is newly operational and this is one of its first notable discoveries, exciting space fans.
