Astronomers have announced the discovery of 2026 ED138, a trans-Neptunian object in the outer solar system estimated at 600 to 1,500 kilometres across. It was detected by the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. If its size and nature are confirmed, the object could qualify as a dwarf planet, joining the five officially recognised by the International Astronomical Union.
Why now: The Rubin Observatory is beginning to reveal previously unseen bodies in the distant solar system, and each new dwarf planet candidate draws scientific interest.
