Xbox Kinect finds new life outside of gaming
Original: The Xbox Kinect failed as a gaming accessory, but it's ridiculously useful without an Xbox
The Kinect, Microsoft's motion-sensing camera that failed to catch on as a gaming accessory for the Xbox, is proving surprisingly useful for other purposes once detached from the console. Tech writers point out that its depth-sensing camera and microphone array make it handy for projects like 3D scanning, home automation and research applications, giving the discontinued hardware a second life among hobbyists.
Why now: Tech enthusiasts are revisiting the Kinect's capabilities now that it is cheap and no longer tied to the Xbox ecosystem.
