Ghost Gear Removal Advances as Marine Habitat Offset in Canada
Original: Ghost Gear Removal Gains Ground as Marine Habitat Offset in Canada
Canada is advancing the removal of ghost gear — lost or abandoned fishing equipment that continues to trap marine life and damage seabed habitats — as part of efforts to offset harm to marine environments. Derelict nets, ropes and traps are being targeted to restore coastal and offshore ecosystems. The approach links cleanup work with marine habitat offsetting, and environmental groups are watching how effectively it protects fish stocks and ocean habitat.
Why now: Growing concern over lost fishing gear harming marine ecosystems has put ghost gear cleanup and habitat offsetting in the spotlight.
