For Halloween, readers are being introduced to lesser-known creatures from African folklore, including a Tanzanian tale in which a dead ogre transforms into a plant. In the story, an ogre resembling a porcupine was killed and buried under a fireplace, only for a pumpkin to grow there the next morning and begin speaking. The tales highlight how ogres in these traditions can return in unexpected forms.
Why now: Halloween is driving interest in spooky folklore, and African mythological creatures offer fresh material beyond familiar Western monsters.
