The number of US police departments partnering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement has doubled in just eight months, according to an NPR report. The surge involves 287(g) agreements, which deputize local officers to carry out federal immigration enforcement. Critics accuse the agencies of undermining community trust and say the expansion signals aggressive federal pressure on local law enforcement to participate in deportations.
Why now: Rapid growth in 287(g) partnerships has drawn strong opposition from immigration advocates amid the current immigration enforcement debate.
