Ottawa parks add app-unlocked sports equipment lockers
Original: Some # ottawa parks have new sel-serve cabinet you can unlock with a smartphone app to open it and retrieve a soccer bal
Some Ottawa parks have installed self-serve cabinets that residents can unlock with a smartphone app to borrow a soccer ball or basketball for use at the park. The idea is winning praise as a convenient free amenity, though there is criticism: the app is the only way to borrow a ball, requiring a smartphone and mobile data, which leaves out people without either.
Why now: Residents are debating a new shared-equipment pilot that is convenient but excludes those without smartphones
