Richest 0.1% emit more carbon than half of humanity, Oxfam says
Original: Richest 0.1% (8M) produce more carbon pollution than 3.5B
A new Oxfam report finds the richest 0.1% of humanity — roughly 8 million people — produce more carbon pollution than the poorest 3.5 billion people combined, while continuing to profit from polluting investments. The findings are drawing attention to extreme wealth inequality as a driver of the climate crisis and calls for taxes on the ultra-rich's carbon-heavy assets.
Why now: A major Oxfam report on climate inequality has just been released, sparking debate over wealth, emissions and responsibility.
