NWSL Shield race goes down to the final day

Original: Winning an NWSL Shield is difficult. This year’s tight race will ‘put some respect’ on the award https://www. nytimes.co

The NWSL Shield race will be decided on the final day of the regular season for the first time in two seasons, with teams like Gotham FC and San Diego Wave still in contention. Writers and fans argue that this year's unusually tight contest should earn the Shield more respect as a trophy, given how hard it is to win the league's top regular-season prize.

Why now: The NWSL regular season is ending with the Shield still undecided, a rare tight race drawing attention to the award's value.
