New Mexico megachurch endorses Republicans, testing federal ban
Original: New Mexico megachurch endorses Republican candidates, testing federal ban https://www. theguardian.com/us-news/2026/o ct
A New Mexico megachurch has publicly endorsed Republican candidates ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, directly challenging a federal law that prohibits churches from endorsing political candidates without risking their tax-exempt status. The move is being watched as a test case for how far religious institutions can go in electoral politics, with debate over whether the ban will be enforced.
Why now: The endorsement openly challenges the IRS ban on church political endorsements, making it a potential legal and political flashpoint during the 2026 midterms.
