Southern Africa's first known stenciled rock art discovered
Original: Southern Africa's first known stenciled rock art found hiding in plain sight
Researchers have identified the first known stenciled rock art in Southern Africa, a form long documented elsewhere but never before confirmed in the region. The discovery suggests the technique spread more widely than previously believed and was overlooked despite sitting in a well-studied area, prompting fresh discussion among archaeologists about how much ancient art may still go unrecognized.
Why now: The identification of an entirely new category of rock art in a region thought to be well surveyed is a notable archaeological find.
