A megachurch in New Mexico has publicly endorsed two Republican candidates running in this year's midterm elections, including one backed by Donald Trump in one of the state's few competitive races. The endorsements have drawn criticism because they appear to violate federal law prohibiting tax-exempt churches from backing political candidates, sparking debate over the separation of church and state.

Why now: A religious institution allegedly violating federal tax law by endorsing candidates is a contentious church-and-state issue during midterm season
