International Internet Day is being marked on October 29, commemorating the day in 1969 when the first message was sent between two computers over ARPANET, the precursor to today's internet. Posts celebrating the anniversary note that the network has been 'swapping packets' ever since, with users wishing the internet a happy birthday and reflecting on more than five decades of online connectivity.

Why now: It is the anniversary of the first computer-to-computer network message on October 29, 1969, prompting annual celebrations.
